To Ursula & Barbara
This is the background to my reviled words "Oh dear, I rest my case".
Attacking Ken Friedman is like a layperson trying to play chess against the
new Deep Blue, not because the machine was rigged in its own favour, but
because it knows all the rules (rules that work for everybody & then some),
has a phenomenal memory, which is worst of all, because it remembers all
your false moves. You can only hope to win against Deep Blue if you
thoroughly study the rules themselves, and if you want to or need to break
these rules (dangerous but highly recommended), know that it can be done,
but only through improving the "rules" thereby improving the game.
This is like all good design (thinking) - it not only improves the lives of
everyone (genderless) being design for and designed with, but it immensely
adds to design knowledge and the way we think about the very essence of
design.
I have seen these attacks on twitter, and they are as Ken described - and
quite disturbing.
To Keith: I have just seen a news item on Australia Day, and apparently the
politicians in Freemantle cancelled all activities for the 26th and moved
all gatherings to the 28th. According to the reporter support for the
banning of Australia Day is gathering momentum every year among
non-indigenous people.
We also had our own "South Africa Day" in the form of van Riebeeck Day, the
person sent to the Cape to establish a colony in 1652, and no one today
mourns the doing away of that "Day of Commemoration" - as well as Settlers'
Day, a day that angered not only the black population but also the
Afrikaners.
Thankfully both have now gone.
