THEME: UNDERSTANDING URBAN VISUAL CULTURE THROUGH DESIGN CULTURE
DESCRIPTION: UNESCO's recent emphasis on 'culture' being central to sustainable urban development, urban renewable and innovation, and their past encouragement that urban planners should help cities use design, suggests a need for more emphasis on the link between culture and design for better understanding the so-called urban age we now live in. 'Understanding Urban Visual Culture through Design Culture' places specific emphasis on how urban visual culture may be understood through what has been termed 'design culture as agency'. Approaches to exploring this are encouraged from a variety of disciplinary perspectives and city methodologies, from traditional research forms of inquiry to so called practice-based research.
