Dear Julian
We have had rolling stacks with map trays at Cambridge University
Library since 2008. We have been really pleased with them and they are
very easy to move.
Brief details are available at:
http://www.lib.cam.ac.uk/Newsletters/nl39/index.html
And see picture 5 at:
http://www.lib.cam.ac.uk/deptserv/maps/refurbpic.html
The stacks of drawers came from C&D (now CD Sheet Metal
http://www.cdsheetmetal.co.uk/planchests.html) and the mobile frames
were supplied by EcoSpace (http://www.ecospace.co.uk/) who have had
several contracts in the Library. The frames include some ordinary
shelves for book storage.
There are 480 drawers in mobile units, stacked 40 high. All of our
drawers are 33mm deep (ie the shallower option available from C&D) and
they are very easy to move. You do, however, need to raise the floor
level a few inches so that the rails and other bits and pieces can be
fitted underneath (we have a little step which has not caused any
accidents so far!).
We chose to have locks fitted on the drawers (one lock for each
10-drawer unit).
The architect and her team worked out the floor loading but this link
may be of interest: http://www.waml.org/mapcabwt.html
Other plan chest suppliers are listed at
