Dear Elin and all,
There is a particular problem in focussing on 'design schools' as distinct
from design programs as it excludes the majority of tertiary-level design
education.
The 'elephant in the room' is the exclusion of the heavyweights of the
design world - the education programs for hundreds of engineering, IT and
other technical design fields. For example, there are probably as many
different design fields just related to the design of sub-sea structures and
machines as there are Art and Design disciplines.
Its perhaps worth remembering Steve Jobs described Apple as an engineering
design business that used conventional engineering design processes.
In parallel and in addition (and also distinct from Art and Design) are the
design programs that are outside both Art and Design and Engineering. An
example: tertiary-level courses in design of strategies for crime
prevention.
It's a mistake to think that best practice in design education and design
curricula are represented by 'design schools' ... and especially that best
practice in design education is represented by identifying the best design
schools whose focus is the Art and Design fields.
Best wishes,
Terence

Subject: top 10-20 design schools?
Dear list readers,
I'm interested in finding out the top 10/20 design schools in the world.
This for doing an documentary study on design course curriculums.
However most lists I found is US dominated, which makes me a bit concerned
since I'm interested to get a cross world perspective on design education
and not only study the American school system. This got me wonder...
What is your opinion on this topic, do you agree with the above statement
that US is dominating design education? is the American design schools
overall so much better than the rest of the world as these lists indicate?
And do any of you have any source indicating a more mixed (as in different
parts of the world) result? If not, why do you believe we have ended up with
this lop-sidedness regarding design schools...
Best regards Elin Olander, Lund University
