Dear Darren,
Thanks for your input... I need some minutes to place your very interesting comments in relation to what's going on in my head... The Spontaneous feeling is that the issue is the same in Sweden, just need to look up my argumentation first... I will come back to you.
Best regards Elin

Ämne: Re: SV: top 10-20 design schools?
I was recently involved in some curriculum development for Post Graduate Taught (PGT) Design Programmes in the UK.
In the UK, we have the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA), an independent body entrusted with monitoring, and advising on, standards and quality in UK Higher Education.
Among other things, they generate Subject benchmark statements (following National discussions in 2006).
Subject Benchmark Statements (SBS) set out expectations about standards of degrees in a range of subject areas.
So, off I went in search of the PGT "Design" SBS
Subject benchmark statements for subjects studied at master's level :
Architecture
Business and Management
Chemistry
Computing
Counselling and psychotherapy
Criminology
Dentistry
Engineering
Forensic science
Librarianship, Information, Knowledge, Records and Archives Management
Mathematics, Statistics and Operational Research
Medicine
Optometry
Pharmacy
Physics
Veterinary science
What no Design?
Where's Wally?
Look at the fine tradition of Post Graduate Taught Programmes in Design available in the UK - Pioneering, World-leading, .... and yet no PGT Design SBS?
I did peruse the Architecture SBS document and, unsurprisingly, discovered passages peppered with "design".
With minimal selective substitution I extracted the following:
"The creative activity of design that lies at the core of "Design" education is
characterised by diversity of method, theoretical underpinning and aesthetic expression.
The contested nature of design gives rise through debate to the advancement of the
subject. Design is a complex process that brings together creative conception and
highly pragmatic detailed development, and is closely related to other important aspects
of "Design" study: technology and environment; cultural context; management,
practice and law; and communication. It is, therefore, the interaction of ideas, intentions
and operations that gives "Design" its distinctive character and allows for the variety
of university programmes..............."
Nom nom nom.
If one then looks through Undergraduate Taught (Bachelor) QAA documents
April 2016
A draft [updated] Subject benchmark statement for "Art and Design"
Undergraduate Taught:
W100 (Fine Art)
W110 (Drawing)
W120 (Painting)
W130 (Sculpture)
W140 (Printmaking)
W150 (Calligraphy)
W160 (Fine art conservation)
W190 (Fine art not elsewhere classified)
W200 (Design studies)
W210 (Graphic design)
W211 (Typography)
W220 (Illustration)
W230 (Clothing/fashion design)
W240 (Industrial/product design)
W250 (Interior design)
W260 (Furniture design)
W270 (Ceramics design)
W280 (Interactive & electronic design)
W290 (Design studies not elsewhere classified)
W600 (Cinematics &photography)
W640 (Photography)
W700 (Crafts)
Glory be!
"For the purpose of clarity in this Statement, Art and Design is referred to as the
'subject', while the distinct areas of activity within the subject are referred to as 'disciplines'.
These disciplines are in a continuous state of evolution and cross-fertilisation, necessitating
benchmark standards that accommodate a wide spectrum of provision. In reflecting the
multiplicity and interdisciplinary nature of programmes covered by the subject, the review
group has added an annex of typical titles for Art and Design bachelor's degrees with
honours, as at the date of publication ............"
So dynamic, incomplete, embracing ambiguity,
nom nom nom
Which brings us to JACS codes: W240 (Industrial/product design);W280 (Interactive & electronic design); W140 (Printmaking)...........etc
HESA collect, process and publish data about higher education (HE) in the UK. They bring us JACS:
JACS (the Joint Academic Coding System) is a way of classifying academic subjects (QAA say "disciplines" see above) and modules...........................................
The same JACS code can be applied to Programmes across different Schools or Faculties.
Now the Rankers come to the party:
"Do we rank under the Subject heading "Art and Design"? Do we rank under JACS code headings (containing Programmes from different Schools and Departments within an Institute)?
And out pop League Tables from a variety of Brands. One example, "Design & Crafts" [The Guardian] "Subject" (UK) league table, according to the Guardian, includes University Bachelor Programmes involving " The study of the design of everyday objects, taking into account technology, commerce and aesthetics. May cover computers as design tools"
3 out of the 5 Programmes listed below are included in the Design & Crafts Subject ranking assessment described above. Two of the Programmes (of the five listed) are considered to be outside Design & Crafts?
Design for Industry BA
Product Design Engineering BSc
Textile Design: BA
Product Design BSc
BSc Industrial Product Design
In this instance it is the last two (Product Design BSc, BSc Industrial Product Design) that are deemed outside "Design & Crafts" but the Product Design Engineering BSc [JACS CODE W2x] is in, along with Design for Industry and Textile Design.
So
QAA monitor and advise on standards and quality in UK Higher Education
HESA collect, process and publish data about Higher Education in the UK
and I need to get out more............

Dear Darren,
So true... and how do we separate art from design and will we really do that... and...
I agree that we need to cooperate not split, since design as subject is too small to creating a critical mass for getting further as a research topic...
Best/ Elin
