Darrel et al-- When introducing the concept of plate tectonics I emphasize the progression of thought as opposed to finding a single "hero" scientist. The window 1963-1968 is that key gestation period for me, starting with Vine-Matthews-Morley (1963) and culminating with Isacks-Oliver-Sykes (1968). Many great pieces were produced in that window, including the first applications to past geologic settings. Identifying THE year or THE paper does not reflect the intellectual process toward understanding and adoption of the plate tectonics framework we recognize today. So, we can celebrate into next year.
