Dear Gunnar,
Second attempt - possibly more confused.
Gibson tells us that we know what flatness is for (babies can apprehend
edges). We apprehend a flat surface and we know the kinds of things that
flatness allows. Like walking and putting things on tables. We can
experience the fun in this apprehension being brought to our attention
when, for some unexpected reason, a table collapses and our drink is
spilled. Many of the experience-based thrills at fun parks are based on
this gap between what things seem to be for and what then is revealed.
David is pointing out that designed affordances can be understood through
rule systems. The rule is that a handle presents itself within the meaning
system of doors. We understand that handles with levers are usually pulled
down. Things get more complicated when we donıt know which way we want to
have the door work - push, pull.
This problem is linked to Wittgenstein - he writes about the wretched man
who may spend the rest of his life stuck behind a door because he doesnıt
know how to have he door.
Wittgenstein even came up with an answer to his problem - and the French
have this system - you have a knob when the door should be pulled and a
lever when the door should be pushed.
In the film Amelie, she reverse the handles on the naughty green grocerıs
door and it flummoxes him. He experiences the rules being broken.
