I would like to celebrate the thoughts from Jean. Long ago I learned
that although lots of statistical tools make computations and the drawing
of diagrams, the tedious labor of plotting each point on a graph by hand
and of doing the calculations provided time for thought and reflection that
the automatic systems seemed to kill. When things are too easy, the
creative process suffers.
Here is the challenge. As the tools we use become more powerful, how can we
maintain the engagement and creativity that comes through deep reflection
and contemplation so nicely described by Jean?
I strongly beleive these new tools are coming. This means several things:
- We should be involved in their design
- We need to learn how to take advantage of their strengths without
losing the advantages of human creativity and insight
If done properly, this can be a great adventure. If done badly, ti will
lead to disillusion and an unsatisfactory world.
