The Music Department at the University of Bristol is pleased to welcome
applications for AHRC-funded PhD programmes in Composition and Musicology.
In Composition we are well known for acoustic work, ranging from solo to
symphonic scale, electro-acoustic work, including acousmatic composition,
and composition exploring the interface of Western and non-Western
traditions.
In Musicology, research interests include not only the Western art music
tradition, but screen media, non-Western and popular music. We have
expertise in jazz and hip-hop; in medieval and renaissance music; in opera,
film, British music, music and migration, and 19th- and 20th-century
political/cultural history more generally. Several of our students are
co-supervised between Music and a related Department, such as Russian,
English, Religious Studies, or History.
You can find out more about our vibrant research community, including over
70 postgraduate students, here: http://www.bristol.ac.uk/music/research/.
You are also warmly welcome at our Tuesday afternoon research seminars
http://www.bris.ac.uk/music/events/.
Funding for doctoral study is available by competition. The University of
Bristol is a member of the Arts and Humanities Research Council-funded
South West and Wales Doctoral Training Partnership (SW&W DTP)
http://www.sww-ahdtp.ac.uk/
The DTP consortium, which consists of eight universities working
cross-institutionally, will award more than 50 scholarships for students
commencing doctoral research in 2017-18. The closing date for applications
is 12 January 2017. Because of the logistics of co-supervision we ask that
if you wish to undertake doctoral study based at Bristol and within this
DTP, you make contact with the Head of Music, [log in to unmask],
as soon as possible and certainly before submitting a DTP application.
The University also expects to be in a position to offer a number of its
own postgraduate research scholarships to outstanding applicants. Details
will be available shortly, but the application deadline date is the same,
12 January 2017.
