PhD Funding for Music at Royal Holloway, University of London
The Department of Music at Royal Holloway invites applications for PhD study in Composition, Ethnomusicology and Musicology.
We achieved an extremely high ranking in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), which placed us 3rd among Music departments for the quality of our research. We have an excellent record of PhD completion and a thriving and supportive postgraduate community of over 60 PhD students.
Our 21 academic staff represent an unusually broad range of intellectual and creative interests, covering music studies from early medieval to contemporary music, and from the Americas to Asia and Europe. Much of our research crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries and integrates perspectives from the fields of ethnomusicology, musicology, theory, film, composition, and aesthetics. Royal Holloway leads the TECHNE AHRC Doctoral Training Partnership, which includes the Universities of Brighton, Kingston, Roehampton, the Royal College of Art, the University of Surrey and the University of the Arts London. Between them, member institutions will offer around 50 Doctoral Scholarships (maintenance of £16,296 plus a fee waiver) each year. In addition, Royal Holloway offers a number of generous scholarships of its own ranging from fee waivers to full maintenance awards.
The Music departmental deadline for funding applications is 22 January 2017, by which date candidates must have applied to Royal Holloway for a place, been interviewed and made an offer, and submitted a TECHNE funding application form complete with two academic references. You are strongly urged to submit an application in time for an interview to take place before the end of Term 1 (9 December 2016). If you wish to find out about the feasibility of your research or creative project, an informal enquiry can be made to the postgraduate research admissions tutor, Professor Julian Johnson<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.
