Hello Dave,
No need to counter.
I was very careful in my email to say that I wouldn't support XP precisely for the security holes. However, I would still run it by MA Ethics if I was going to have to make the final decision and I wasn't aware of any other institution taking guidance in this area. After-all, it is about showing due diligence and accepting that some people will be denied access to digital culture by my decision and being mindful of ACE's creative case for diversity. It is just good to demonstrate that it has been considered appropriately, agreed with by the wider sector and to make the decision process transparent and above all to demonstrate that the decision hasn't been made purely as a business decision.
On the last point, I wouldn't dream of 'letting or not letting' someone drive a car without an MOT. That must remain their own choice and the museum game certainly isn't about restricting someone's choice. However, when they found out that they couldn't bring it down my private road and made a complaint, I would like to be able to say that my decision was backed up ethically by an independent respected authority and not by my own assertion of what might or might not be good for them.
I just thought it might be an interesting one for the Ethics Committee to consider. Undoubtedly, it will restrict access to some and I have a suspicion that those 'some' will be in the brackets around ACE's creative case for diversity.
Kind regards,
Richard

Let me put a counter proposal,
If we are playing the ethics card, then surly its un-ethical to continue to support an operating system with non-disclosed security holes into which an un-wary person less skilled in Windows is likely to fall victim too.
There are tools such as "Classic Shell" which may help such people migrate to Windows/7..

would you let them use a car with an expired MOT?
