medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Two additional images, both from an earlier thirteenth-century collection of saint's lives in their French-language translation by Wauchier de Denain (betw. 1226 and 1250; London, BL, MS Royal 20 D VI):
1) fol. 200v: Placidus at center, holding a vessel with a neck; at left St. Benedict; at right, St. Maurus:

This scene would seem to show Placidus either about to undertake the water-gathering errand in which he nearly drowned or else being presented to Benedict after his rescue. Yet the British Library's caption, without naming Placidus, calls this merely "Maur annd [sic] Benedict", thus leaving open the possibility that the young saint in the center is Maurus. Is that likely?
2) fol. 205v: the martyrdom of Placidus (lower register at right) and his companions:

Best again,
John Dillon
