Hello Peter and Friends,
In response to your prompt above, at Georgia Tech we have a small cadre of faculty and students who are pursing new genres of participatory design, particularly with regards to civic issues. Much of this has been informed by work from colleagues in Europe, particularly those in KADK Copenhagen, MADEA in Malmø, and now Aalto in Helsinki. We’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with those colleagues and we working towards new modes of design research and education.
Our context at Georgia Tech is distinctive because we are not in a school of design, in fact we are in a college of liberal arts. In my opinion, this has allowed use to shape our research and pedagogy in unique ways, precisely because we are not a professional school or program and we are not, technically even a design program. Of course, this has its limitations too (like often not being recognized as a place where social design / design research occurs), but it’s an interesting trade off because be being housed is college of liberal arts our commitments, responsibilities, and methods are inherently oriented towards critical engagements.
Regards,
Carl
