So then, given your assertions and attestations as to what design research is not, ..what is definitively and categorically design research then, in your context?
Thanks, Benny

Dear Glen and all,
I suggest that Brownlee's comments on design research are mistaken in lots of ways.
The biggest mistake perhaps is to see consumer research as design research.
The equivalent in engineering design would be to see design research to include stress analysis and all the thousands of engineering research fields.
To regard consumer research as the main task of design research would be the same as regarding engineering stress analysis as the main task of design research.
Both are nonsense.
Much the same is found in architecture and many other design fields.
Its better if customer research seen as marketing research.
Then you could reasonably argue that much of the marketing research designers need for information about consumers for design activities will disappear with automation.
The fact that some designers (alongside their design work) occasionally do such marketing research to understand consumers doesn't change things.
Consumer research is still better seen as marketing research - not design research.
(One explanation of the origin of renaming of marketing research/consumer research as design research in design schools is that it occurred as an accidental artefact of university politics.)
Regards,
Terence

Design Researchers
"When ethnographic research was new in design, there were designers who specialized in research," explains Harry West, CEO of Frog. "The role of design researcher is now evolving to become a fundamental skill and practice for all types of designers. Today, for any design challenge, it is assumed that you first learn what the customer wants; every designer must know how to set up customer research and learn from the source." Consequently, no one needs a dedicated design researcher anymore. "The role is so fundamental that every designer should know how to do it," says West.
John Rousseau, executive director at Artefact, puts a finer point on it: New technologies like machine learning and virtual reality are killing design research. "Design research as we know it may cease to exist—at least in terms of the types of ethnographic field work we do today," he says. "Research—-and researchers—-will likely be marginalized by new forms of automated data and insight generation, compiled via remote sensing and delivered through technologies like virtual reality."
