The trailer/teaser for this programme looked to be quite wonderful but the show itself, as with others in the series such as The Joy of Statistics, is only available in the UK because of "rights issues". You would think that the BBC would want to sort this out if only for marketing purposes. Does anyone on the list know how folks living in the rest of the world might get hold of these programmes?

Everyone
‘The Joy of Data’ is on bbc4 9pm tonight http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b07lk6tj
A witty and mind-expanding exploration of data, with mathematician Dr Hannah Fry. This high-tech romp reveals what data is and how it is captured, stored, shared and made sense of. Fry tells the story of theengineers of the data age, people most of us have never heard of despite the fact they brought about a technological and philosophical revolution.
For Hannah, the joy of data is all about spotting patterns. Hannah sees data as the essential bridge between two universes - the tangible, messy world that we see and the clean, ordered world of maths, where everything can be captured beautifully with equations.
The film reveals the connection between Scrabble scores and online movie streaming, explains why a herd of dairy cows are wearing pedometers, and uncovers the network map of Wikipedia. What's the mystery link between marmalade and One Direction?
The film hails the contribution of Claude Shannon, the mathematician and electrical engineer who, in an attempt to solve the problem of noisy telephone lines, devised a way to digitise all information. Shannon singlehandedly launched the 'information age'. Meanwhile, Britain's National Physical Laboratory hosts a race between its young apprentices in order to demonstrate how and why data moves quickly around modern data networks. It's all thanks to the brilliant technique first invented there in the 1960s by Welshman Donald Davies - packet switching.
But what of the future? Should we be worried by the pace of change and what our own data could be used for? Ultimately, Fry concludes, data has empowered all of us. We must have machines at our side if we're to find patterns in the modern-day data deluge. But, Fry believes, regardless of AI and machine learning, it will always take us to find the meaning in them.
Sorry for any cross posting, and enjoy
David

Subject: Anonymisation Decision-making Framework published today (open access)
All,
The Anonymisation Decision Making Framework is published today and is available as an open access book from:
http://ukanon.net/ukan-resources/ukan-decision-making-framework/
This is the first serious attempt to unify technical and legal aspects of anonymisation and provides a comprehensive guide to doing anonymisation in practice which has been recognised by the UK Information Commissioner.
The book was also produced through an innovative community engagement approach with inputs from across sectors and disciplines and has been through a review process with a level of rigour far in excess of the average pay-to-own book.
Here is what some people said about the book:
“It is my belief that this book will come to be seen as gold-standards in the field: it is fundamentally rational, scientifically and technically rigorous, easily understandable and framed in a way that makes them useable. I intend for it to become mandatory reading across my research group.”
Paul Burton - Professor of Infrastructural Epidemiology at the University of Bristol
“This authoritative and accessible decision-making framework will help the information professional to anonymise personal data effectively. The framework forms an excellent companion piece to the ICO’s code of practice.”
Elizabeth Denham – UK Information Commissioner
“The Anonymisation Decision Making Framework provides a practical and useful structure to assist data custodians in the process of anonymising a dataset before release or sharing. The lack of a practical guide providing a broadly applicable “how to” manual has been a noticeable gap until the appearance of this book. In addition, the book integrates (UK‐specific) legal and technical perspectives to provide a comprehensive and readable treatment covering both the data and the data environment or context.”
Christine O’Keefe – Senior Principal Research Scientist, Data61, CSIRO, and Adjunct Professor, School of Mathematical Sciences, University of Adelaide.
"Extremely useful to data controllers who need to safely release/share sensitive personal data"
Josep Domingo-Ferrer - Professor of Computer Science at Universitat Rovira I Virgili and UNESCO chair of Data Privacy
I want to congratulate the authors for this interesting, relevant, and very helpful report which fills an important gap in the literature. Most books and articles currently available on this topic are written only for experts in the field. Furthermore, they mostly focus on the statistical aspects of data confidentiality and only approach the problem by looking at the data. The holistic approach proposed in this book is intuitive and sensible. I fully agree with the authors that looking at the anonymisation problem only from the data perspective falls short of important aspects of the problem. The authors illustrate clearly that considering the environment is at least as important as the data themselves.

===============================Call For Paper================================
The 7th International Workshop on Wireless Networks and Multimedia (WNM-2016)
http://empslocal.ex.ac.uk/people/staff/yw433/wnm2016/
To be held in conjunction with The 18th IEEE International Conference on High Performance Computing and Communications (HPCC-2016)
12-14 December 2016, Sydney, Australia
Submission deadline: 20 July 2016
Introduction
============
The wireless communication technologies have evolved quickly over the past years. As the explosive growth in broadband wireless networks, multimedia applications will dominate the future wireless communication society, resulting in non-trivial problems in terms of available capacity, reliability, quality-of-service, delay, and throughput.
To successfully support wireless multimedia applications, it is necessary to improve the state-of-the-art techniques (such as radio resource management, mobility, handoff, and location management, etc) in the multimedia transmission over wireless networks in order to provide quality-of-service guarantees between the end-users and achieve a high quality-of-experience for end-users.
This workshop will address the important problems and challenges caused by the transmission of multimedia applications over wireless networks. The workshop aims to bring together computer scientists and engineers in different disciplines to share and exchange their experience and ideas and discuss state-of-the-art and in-progress research on all aspects of wireless networks and multimedia applications.
WNM-2016 is the next event, in a series of successful International Workshops on Wireless Networks and Multimedia (WNM), previous held as WNM-2015 (Liverpool, UK, October 2015), WNM-2014 (Dalian, China, August 2014), WNM-2013 (Melbourne, Australia, July 2013), WNM-2012 (Liverpool, UK, June 2012), WNM-2011 (Changsha, China, November 2011), and HMWN-2010 (Bradford, UK, June 2010).
