Fernando, Alfredo, Maria,
Please do not refer to me as Professor . It resonates as if I was Sargento Garcia.
Remember that I entered in this discussion because there were attributed some responsibility to European powers in rejecting a paper for a conference similar to the responsibilities attributed to the same European powers in colonialism.
By 1830 most of the actual Latin American nations were already independent. It means that their official colonial bonds to their respective colonial powers were broken. Earlier, in the previous century, the greatest power in Americas (thirteen British colonies were independent also). The British cease to have exclusivity in the commerce with the 13 and Spain and Portugal ceased to have exclusivity in the exploitation and commerce with their Vice Reinados or Capitanias). For nearly 200! years now these countries are detached officially from their original colonial powers. There is no way that any of the living beings in our days in these countries, human or other, have in anyway experienced colonialism practiced by their European original colonialist powers. In fact, structured, organized merciless modern processes of exploitation were practiced by “independent” governments and oligarchies. Independence was the form used by the colonists to perpetuate their modes of exploitation (from which of the original European powers got less or no profit). Although it looks colonialism, it is simple exploitation, political inequity, inequality, unfairness, fascism, cruelty by which rich people control and use all forms of control to maintain and enlarge their richness. Every “independent” country in the Americas could and should have done better when they cut the official bonds with their European colonial powers.
Maria, however, talks of a different thing. An external power from her own continent conquered and cultural, economically dominated her homeland. It is not like Gibraltar, It is not like Northern Ireland, but it is very similar. Call it invasion, domination, usurpation, conquest but do not call it colonialism. (All the northern part of Mexico, from S. Francisco to S. Diego suffered from the same fate)
What I’m trying to say is that although colonialism as a doctrine invented in Europe that applies especially to Africa in the 1890’s and the consequent decolonialism since 1945 to 1974 it shouldn’t be applied in the same way to South America.
Also what I’m trying to say is that colonial and postcolonial studies deal with far more important and complex issues than a rejected paper. I’m not saying that Colonialism is (merely) a buzzword. What I’m saying is that, in this context, (an online platform resulting from a rejected paper) is being used as a buzzword. And I don’t think that this is good for postcolonial studies.
Best,
Eduardo
PS: A discussion between Cameron and João arouse while I was writing this post. It really went down.
Well, sometimes we all need some time off. I had to detox from this list for a while. I really suggest attention on Brexit, future sanctions on Portugal and Spain, the situation in Venezuela and Brasil. Also my saludos (my computer insists that I should write salads) in the agreement with FARC, Turkey explosions and, sorry, what is left of the Euro cup.
On Imperialism you should also take a look at What have the Romans ever did for us? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExWfh6sGyso

Dear Maria de Mater O'Neill, you could not say it better "hay una
diferencia muy grande, (...), entre un dato histórico a una experiencia de
vivencia". Perhaps here in this great list we open a little door to
understand, trough conversation in design, the worlds in the world,
according to a sentence from Alfredo; not only designing but also in logics
and philosophies. Make sense to me for instance, get a polilogue
(intercultural dialogue) around the idea of -Well being- in western
cultures, quite different of the idea of Andean -Buen vivir- (-Sumak
Kausay- in Quechua culture. -Suma Quamaña- in aymara culture), also in
India, Portugal, Africa, UK, among others. Same idea could be about the
core of this list -Design- Imagine a polilogue between local concepts,
experiences and practices (different than professions, a western
construction) in where anybody have not the last word. But, in where, all
desire comprehend the meanings, without impositions.
Oliveira, Mahmoud Keshavarz, Danah Abdulla, Ece Canli, Matt Kiem, Tristan
Schultz, a quienes por cierto no volví a leer en esta lista, y quienes
deben tener mucho más por decir aquí.
