between the 18th and 20th century: Cultural, social and historical

One of the research focuses of the Department of Music Analysis,
Theory and History/University ofMusic and Performing Arts in
Vienna is music history of Central Europe. The workshop Musical
culture/s of the Habsburg Monarchy and its successor states is
aimed to open a wider international research platform, which
would provide discussions on current perspectives, projects, as
well as the possibilities of future cooper ation. The light
should be shed on innovative approaches to music history in
political, economic, social and cultural context/s, resulting in
the foundation of mutual research projects and publications. The
objectives of sustainability of the network includes the
participation of both senior researchers and young scholars.
On the defined broad basis, the following subjects are welcome:
- imperial versus national (self-)presentation through music and
music historiography
- gender perspectives in music and music historiography
- transregional and transnational cultural politics
- music and media
- commercial, political, social strategies of presentation and
dissemination of music
- music in the network of international cultural exchange
- music in the context of Pan-Slavism
- music and Jewishness
- music – migration – exile
- musical nostalgia
Papers should be based on original research and should not have already
been presented elsewhere. The official language of the symposium is
English.
Proposals of up to 300 words and a short biography may be submitted to

The organizers of the workshop, Assistant Prof. Dr. Fritz Trümpi
([log in to unmask]) and Dr. Tatjana Marković ([log in to unmask]),
will send the notifications of the outcome by 20 August 2016. A
limited number of bursaries covering travelling and accommodation costs
will be available.
