Here in the US, there has been some push-back to the use of algorithms that have been shown to produce disproportionate prison sentences and parole conditions for blacks and whites. The use of artificial intelligence in employee search and hiring may have equally problematic results. Machine learning isn’t as value free as many would like to think and it’s not clear that we should want value free machine learning to have a large role in shaping out lives.
Here’s an interview with Lucy Suchman, Zeynep Tufekci, and journalist Nathaniel Popper on the subject: https://charlierose.com/videos/28424
It is very clear how machine learning and AI can shape our lives but I’m wondering if anyone has observations on how other aspects of design create unintended negative social conditions. There are a lot of obvious lessons in accessibility efforts but there must be a vast range of unnoticed exclusions going on in all sorts of design.
Can anyone suggest directions to consider, especially things that designer awareness might affect?
