Like Julian and Diana I don't think it's appropriate to brand people who voted 'Leave' as unintelligent (even as a joke!). I voted Remain, but expect that on lots of things I have more in common with the political views of many Leave voters (some of whom I know and who voted in opposition to issues like TTIP and 'fortress Europe') than the bankers and businessmen most prominently supporting Cameron's Remain campaign.
While we don't know why most people voted the way they did and clearly some of those voting Leave did so for 'Britain First' and racist reasons, we know from the demographics in all the polls in the run-up that Leave voters were poorer, more likely to be in council housing and more likely to be unemployed as well as clustered in deprived areas. Given how badly these groups of people have been hit by austerity and how terrible many people's current situation is, it is hardly surprising that a campaign offering a change and a better future was more appealing than one that said we are better off how we are. This is not a sign of unintelligence, but the need for hope in politics and an alternative.
Rachel.

I agree with Diana; the question many people were answering (unconsciously) was "Have you been screwed by neo-liberalism?"
