Joan of Arc, an adjudged heretic, was burned at the stake in Rouen in 1431. In 1456 pope Calixtus III overturned her conviction. Joan was canonized in 1920. Today is her feast day in French dioceses (her secular celebration in France takes place on the second Sunday in May) and her day of commemoration in the Roman Martyrology.

John Dillon
