Scandinavian cinema culture and archival practices: collecting, curating and accessing moving image histories
Archives are not storehouses of neutral material, but play a crucial role in the construction of ‘historical sources’, of documents through selection, classification and categorization, for instance through metadata. An agent in its own right, the archive entails a performative dimension in constructing documents and sources and, as a consequence, in creating the grounds from which history is written.
This special issue brings together scholarship on archives and archiving, theoretical and practical approaches to the relationship between moving images and the archive, and media archaeology, all within the specific context of Scandinavian cinema culture. In line with the ongoing paradigmatic shift from products to processes we would like to direct the attention from the archival content as a product to the process of archiving (creating content).
We especially, but not exclusively, encourage contributions on Scandinavian cinema culture addressing the following topics and approaches:
- Archival remixes, appropriation, mashups etc
- Archives and canons
- Archives and cultural memory
- Archives and identity: self-fashioning
- Archives and intermediality
- Audiovisual preservation formats
- Collaboration and networking between archives
- Curating archival content and representation
- Digital archival techniques and cultures
- Fan culture and the archive
- Feminist archives / Feminism in the archive
- Film festivals as archives and archival practice
- Filmmaking as archival intervention
- Grassroot archives
- Imagining the nation: national film archives
- LGBT-related content
- Metadata, tagging
