Representation, the Artist and Community: Collective Conversations
Cardiff Story Museum, Learning Suite, The Old Library, The Hayes, CF10 1BH (Cardiff city centre, 5 minute walk from bus and rail stations)
3 June 2016, 11 - 5
We want to create space for community members, artists, research artists and researchers working together across the arts, humanities and social sciences (and no doubt beyond!) who are working collaboratively within a community-focussed context to share why, and how they 'do what they do'. How do you describe your practice? What are some of the challenges of working creatively across arts, humanities, social and health sciences in ways which are of practical relevance to community members and groups? How has this enhanced or challenged your practice? Where is the artist in the co-production of artworks and artefacts? Where are the communities you seek to work with? What happens when researcher and artist want different things? When artist as researcher seeks to work in a community setting to create artwork?
What to expect: The day will include a number of conversation pieces, introduced by speakers who will take no more than 20 minutes to set the scene and raise questions for discussion. As part of the registration process, send expressions of interest (no more than 250 words) and a short biography to [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> . The expressions of interest we receive will inform the conversation pieces and will no doubt reflection key preoccupations:
Re/presentation, Representation and visual arts
Artist and aesthetic: Aesthetics, value and meaning; How do artists negotiate process and product; Approaches to community arts; Form and content
Artists in different contexts: What's lost, what's gained? What happens when we go beyond their role? What is our role? How does working in communities shape art practice?
Confirmed speakers and performers:
Simon Campbell and Keith Murrell (Activists)
June Campbell-Davies (Dance Choreographer)
Rabab Ghazoul (Visual Artist)
Carolyn Newman (Cardiff University)
Dr Olivette Otele (Bath Spa University)
Professor Kate Pahl (University of Sheffield)
