Ezequiel Gonzalez-Ocantos (Oxford) - In this talk I will present the argument developed in my book Shifting Legal Visions: Judicial Change and Human Rights Trials in Latin America (forthcoming, Cambridge University Press). The book develops a sociological institutionalist theory of judicial decision making to explain the explosion of human rights trials in Latin America since 2000.

Book launch: A Hidden History of the Cuban Revolution<http://ucl.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d860c8e6b006704dde5d02ead&id=00d2b396b0&e=b8bda7b756>
Steve Cushion - To both its supporters and detractors, the Cuban Revolution is almost universally understood as having been won by a small band of guerrillas. This book turns the conventional wisdom on its head, and argues that the Cuban working class played a much more decisive role in the Revolution’s outcome than previously understood. It contends that significant portions of the Cuban working class launched an underground movement in tandem with the guerrillas operating in the mountains.

Seminar: Gay Purges and the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs during the Cold War<http://ucl.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d860c8e6b006704dde5d02ead&id=b86ddefe72&e=b8bda7b756>
Dr Hector Mackenzie (Global Affairs Canada and Carleton University) - By a tortuous chain of illogic and prejudice, the principal targets of the security service of the Royal Canadian mounted Police during the Cold War were gay and lesbian public servants. Presumptions were made about ‘character weakness’, vulnerability to entrapment or blackmail and consequently risk of betrayal, so that large numbers of loyal public servants were dismissed or purged without any evidence or even grounds for suspicion of unauthorized disclosure of government secrets to foreign (I.e. Soviet) agents.
