Caribbean Cultural and Political Thought: A Workshop

This workshop will provide an opportunity to discuss recent trends in Caribbean criticism and the possible contours of a Caribbean cultural studies. The starting point for the discussion will be the four volumes on Caribbean cultural and political thought edited and published by Aaron Kamugisha, including the recently released Caribbean Popular Culture: Power, Politics and Performance. Aaron Kamugisha is Senior Lecturer and Coordinator of the Cultural Studies programme at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. His current work is a study of coloniality, citizenship and freedom in the contemporary Anglophone Caribbean, mediated through the social and political thought of C.L.R. James and Sylvia Wynter. He is the editor of Caribbean Political Thought, Vols. 1 and 2, Caribbean Cultural Thought: From Plantation to Diaspora, Caribbean Popular Culture: Power, Politics and Performance, and special issues of the journals Race & Class, Small Axe and The C.L.R. James Journal.
