Likewise, I've covered this a lot in my cheating talks and seminars.
The BBC has covered this before as well. They looked at the wearable devices used to cheat in exams sometime last year.
This does just demonstrate that you can issue a catchy press release and it will be picked up on. There's no real reason that the group of reporters seeing this story wouldn't know that it is new.
My experience of exam cheating prevention in the UK is that we are behind other countries, particularly Australia, which has made major strides in light of the recent scandals. Many universities do not even have a policy yet that bans simple smart watches, let alone those sold to support cheating. I still know of situations where calculators are not checked to see if they have notes stored within them, or where it is difficult to ensure that students taking a bathroom break do not have unauthorised access to materials. Smart watches are just one part of this overall problem.

Plus, the video I posted was from 2011!
I guess it's better late than never.

Hi Robert (and James, nice solution!),
I posted on this a while ago - it is really old news - and posted
information about how to unlock the watch from the advertised emergency
function¹. So, the BBC really are recycling ancient information. Phil
Newton first posted on this in February last year:

Here is my post-investigation post explaining how to unlock the watch
(it¹s really easy!):

Tl;dr Total storm in a tea cup. Ban smart watches along with mobiles and
you are sorted!
