We were blocked for many years by the cardiologists [perhaps because a long NHS echo waiting list enhanced the private echo waiting list].
Eventually, about 5 years ago, the PCT decided the echo lists were far too long and asked us to set it up. We charge the PCT £25/sample and do not allow hospital requests except in exceptional crcumstances.
Echo waiting lists shrank significantly [as did PP echos].

Subject: NTproBNP in primary care
Dear all,
We are in the process of trying to introduce NTproBNP for the assessment of suspected heart failure in primary care. I was wondering if any labs already running NTproBNP had data on any of the following:
1. impact of the introduction of NTproBNP on Echo request numbers
2. if echo numbers increased/decreased was there an increase/decrease in heart failure diagnoses?
3. impact on heart failure admissions
4. impact on cardiology referrals
It is very tricky in Scotland to obtain funding for new tests so any data would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Sara Jenks
