Call for Contributions WS Becoming Smart Citizens?
At the Design and the City Conference, Amsterdam 22.4.2016
https://blogs.aalto.fi/smartcitizens/
As smart city initiatives spread, with potential for top-down and technological solutions, we focus on the need and opportunity for ideas, processes and tools to travel or ‘jump’ between contexts, thereby bringing insight into:
1) The cultures and geographies of citizen innovation,
2) Travelling/‘jumping/collaboration’ mechanisms, such as the publishing and sharing of initiatives, guidelines, How To’s and other methods of adaptation and adoption that ‘smart’ citizens made use of.
The workshop will gather practitioners, activists and researchers to explore the conditions by which citizens take an active role and participate in shaping their local environment. Specifically we are interested in the ways replicable initiatives, formats, franchises and new genres to “make the city” locally and elsewhere emerge.
There is an urgent need to understand and elaborate on the conditions by which citizens engage in local city-making activities and to conceptualize what type of “designs” they mobilize or are mobilized by. In this workshop, we intend to investigate bottom-up and decentralised urban ‘smartness’ and how ideas and practices travel. Join us on the 22th of April at the Design & The City Conference in Amsterdam to explore this issues together.
