medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Cate
Thank you for your kind comments. The glass in the Twycross east window comes from several sources, not only St Denis but also the Sainte-Chapelle (there is a superb Descent from the Cross from there) and Le Mans and also possibly from Saint-Julien-du-Sault. It has always been said that it was presented to William IV, who gave it to Lord Howe (though an inscription notes Sir Wathen Waller as the donor). There was in any case a considerable trade in glass from the Continent following the upheavals resulting from the French Revolution.
Best wishes
Gordon

Dear Gordon
thank you for these - and all the other! - photographs of windows. One of these days I will look some of them out in the flesh, so to speak - I hadn’t realised how much medieval glass is preserved in England. How did the window from St Denis get to Twycross?
Thank you
Cate
