---- SNIP ----

Hi Gjoko
thank you for resending this article- there are some very inspirational recommendations and "words to live by" which recent graduates like myself should find inspiring, especially for those of us whom are finding work in design research or similar few and far between in professional practice.

Keep the inspirations coming.
Barbara Trippeer

I am glad that you have found this link interesting, Barbara.
And don't be dishearten. There is an increasing amount of new opportunities coming up for designers who can apply research and strategic thinking in practice.

if you (and others) are interested to know more about where some of the new developments are happening in professional practice, here is a little announcement.

She Ji: The Journal of Design, Innovation, and Economics will soon publish a study that I prepared which is called "Paradigm Shift: Report on the New Role of Design in Business and Society".

Here is the Abstract:

As leading businesses and global organizations started gaining new understanding of the value of design, their internal culture and attitude towards design began to change. Financial companies and management consultancies that have never before been associated with design are now creating their in-house design teams and including design in their portfolio of services. Large corporations that in the past used design in a limited capacity now rapidly increase their in-house design capabilities and appoint designers in executive roles. Venture capitalist firms and start-up companies also started recognizing the value that designers can bring to the business development stages of their investments. Even global organizations and international foundations started placing design on their agendas. All of this is causing a paradigm shift in the field of design. This study examines some of the latest corporate investments in design and reflects on what this means for the field of design. The focus of this study is on the key trend indicators that are defining the current landscape of design and its role in business and society.

----

This report is a case study that examines the role of design in business and society based on current trend indicators observed across a variety of sectors such as financial management companies, multinational corporations, venture capital enterprises, and global not-for-profit organizations. The research approach here can be labeled as phenomenon-oriented and is based on gathering and analyzing documentary evidence. The information gathered for this article has been obtained from public records and sources such as newspaper and magazine articles, interviews, corporate websites, press releases, personal blogs and social network profiles. The study has been narrowed down to include only highly prominent organizations and businesses, globally recognized by leading ranking lists, industry publications, and the general media. The reason behind this selection is that these enterprises and organizations are often perceived as being the leaders in their fields and as such they have the ability to influence or set global trends.

Organizations that have been covered in this report include the following: Apple, Nike, The Coca-Cola Company, IBM Corporation, Bloomberg L.P., PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC), Deloitte, Accenture, Boston Consulting Group (BCG), McKinsey & Company, Fidelity Investments, Capital One, Barclays, Xero, Facebook, Google Ventures, Khosla Ventures, Coca-Cola Founders, United Nations, The World Bank, The Rockefeller Foundation, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and The Clinton Foundation.

This report will hopefully show you where new, and sometimes overlooked opportunities lie.

----

Lately, I like inviting industry professionals to review my work alongside academic peer reviewers/

David R. Butler, the Vice President: Innovation & Entrepreneurship and past Vice President of Global Design at The Coca-Cola Company, kindly agreed to be one of the reviewers of the report. Here is his feedback:

"Gjoko Muratovski has laid out a comprehensive framework for the changing role of design and its ability to create value and drive change. Muratovski delivers a compelling story on the rise of design as a strategy for growth—a must-read for you, your team and your company. With numerous inspirational examples from multinationals to startups and from the worlds of consulting, venture capital and sustainability, Paradigm Shift, should be mandatory reading for your entire team."

The study will be featured in the second issue.

All the best,
Gjoko
