I’m not dismissing or devaluing the crucible of graduate studies, nor did I say that they don’t make original stuff. Academia is a grand pursuit of making—of creating new knowledge through the work of inquiry.
The design studio, however, is a very different thing, as anyone who has experienced it (or read Schon) can attest. Whatever the etymology of “studio”, it is just the english word for the french atelier: workshop. Here students become designers by doing design, working in a simulation of professional practice.
But this is beside the point. However they are made, it is the work that comes after the education that tells the difference. Or is the claim that the PhD is typically a (better? alternative?) pathway to professional practice?
