Hi Gjoko,
I have not read your book so won’t comment on your discussion with Birger about the research question. But, I would like to point out the, to me, obvious assumption in your definition about what ‘evidence' is. You said:
And by evidence, I don’t mean anything more than the basic definition: “The available body of facts or information indicating whether a belief or proposition is true or valid.” In order for this to be legitimate, this body of facts or information needs to be gathered, documented and analysed in a rigorous manner. Also, I don’t know if you know, but another organization that uses EBD is the United Nations - because they are also required to demonstrate objectivity and accountability for their actions.
To tease out your definition, 'the available body of facts or information indicating whether a proposition is true or valid' – there have been decades of qualitative research that has collected, analysed and reported on what people believe, say and do in modes other than what I assume you refer to as numerical/statistical (as this is not in your definition). Courts regularly draw on ‘evidence’ presented as first hand accounts of what happened, ie. witness testimony, to make decisions in law – do you watch Judge Judy?
Your final point about the UN requiring EBD ‘because they are also required to demonstrate objectivity and accountability for their actions’ – is interesting because you bring objectivity and accountability together, although there is no mention of objectivity in your definition of evidence, with the assumption that ‘body of facts or information’ refers to science-based research.
Can you say a little more about this? I am not trying to hold you to account, I just think this is important to tease out and discuss further.
cheers, teena
