POSITION SUMMARY:

The Graduate Communications Design Department at Pratt Institute, the
nation's first masters-level graphic design program and top-ten ranked,
located at the Pratt Manhattan Center, seeks to hire an Assistant
Chairperson. The Assistant Chairperson reports to and assists the
Chairperson with the daily operations of the department as well as with the
development, implementation and management of the academic administration
to support and improve the educational life of the students, faculty, and
staff.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Coordinate admissions activities with the Office of Admissions and
participate in portfolio reviews of applicants.

• Assist with the recruitment and selection of faculty and staff.

• Participate in curriculum coordination and faculty and program
development. Review curricular proposals and modifications to ensure
uniformity across sections, proper course sequencing, etc.

• Assist in planning schedules, course offerings, and faculty assignments.

• Develop, implement and maintain student advisement procedures and advise
graduate students about classes. Approve and register non-majors who wish
to take classes in the Department.

• Assist in the management of departmental facilities and space (i.e.,
planning and needs identification of classrooms, galleries, administrative
space, etc.).

• Serve on department, school and Institute committees and represent the
department at various meetings, workshops and forums.

• Participate in curriculum assessment activities and conduct student
evaluations.

• Coordinate student-centered activities with the Communications Committee
(CC Inform), a committee comprised of graduate communications design
students who assist with exhibitions, visiting lectures, department
publications and website, alumni newsletter, and the student survey.

• Coordinate various end-of-semester, mid-program and end-of-degree survey
and exhibition events.

• Coordinate the storage (both digital and physical) of graduate student
theses/final projects.

• Teach at least one course per semester.

• Perform all other related duties as required.


SALARY commensurate with qualifications and experience.



QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates should have a minimum of three years' academic administrative
experience (program coordinator, director or equivalent), and three years'
teaching experience (part-time or full-time), preferably within a college
and/or university setting. An MFA or equivalent terminal degree in
Communications Design, Graphic Design or a related discipline is required.

Successful candidates will demonstrate expertise in the practice and
education of Communications Design. Excellent organizational,
communications and interpersonal skills, and the ability to develop rapport
with a  diverse faculty and student body required. Experience with
curriculum management, student advisement, and higher-education systems
preferred.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Graduate Communications Design Department at Pratt Institute invites
applications for a full-time tenure track faculty position at the
Assistant/Associate Professor rank to begin August 2016.  Located on the
Institute’s Manhattan campus, the department, which has been educating
graphic and package designers for over 40 years, offers a 62-credit MFA
degree in Communications Design, and a 48-credit MS degree in Package
Design. The successful candidate will teach and assume a leadership role in
the MS Package Design program.



POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:



• Teach design courses at the graduate level (Teaching workload is the
equivalent of 12 lecture hours or 15 studio hours of courses per week each
fall and spring semester.)

• Participate in curriculum development.

• Contribute to developing a strong culture of design research in the
department.

• Maintain substantial creative accomplishments in the profession.

• Maintain scholarly activity, such as publishing and writing, exhibitions,
conference speaking engagements, and participation in professional
organizations.

• Advise students.

• Participate in committee work and other service to the department and the
Institute.

• Perform all other related activities as required.



QUALIFICATIONS:

Successful candidates will demonstrate: expertise in the practice, theory
and history of package design/communications/graphic design; an earned
terminal degree (MFA) or its equivalent; an active record of significant
professional and scholarly accomplishment; and a minimum of 4-6 years of
teaching (full or part-time) at the post-secondary and/or graduate level.
Candidates should have a genuine commitment to teaching design at the
graduate level, possess a progressive and global perspective on the current
and future role of design, and embrace collaboration with other disciplines.



SALARY AND RANK are competitive and commensurate with qualifications and
experience.
