and Ken is right and wrong. All dictionaries are both and (unless you want to make up a new language and write the rules for that) it would be impossible to make a dictionary that was not both. Some lean more toward one or the other. Here’s a great old David Foster Wallace article on that. (Sadly, old is the only sort of David Foster Wallace article.) Much of what he says applies fairly directly to a lot of design activities, most obviously communication and graphic design:
