Sorry I don’t have more time to spend on this discussion. I am sorry I can’t reply to many of the contributions that are interesting. But before leaving it I thought I would share with you my original worries about EBD.
In the Norwegian research magazine “Forskning” people like James McGuirk from the University in Nordland and Rune Slagstads and Jan Messel in their book on practice education (Norwegian) state that the pendulum has been swinging too far in the direction of procedures and theoretical knowledge and evidence based practice on the cost of the Aristotelian Phronesis, the ability to act out of the requirements of the situation. This is obvious when looking at engineering education today at least how I know it, where the students are good at recitating ISO standards and calculations but are practically unable to solve the simplest engineering problem. It is a disaster and how could they let this happen?
The same development is happening in health care according to McGuirk, and it is probably reinforced within the framework of NPM.
I think many protagonists for EBD on this list, when they are attacking the arty side of design, in reality are unwillingly attacking the phroensis of design. Design practice has been highly developed and deeply based on this “Phronesian aspect”. It is its strength but also its weakness. An adjustment of this I would appreciate but I am deeply worried that this will go to far and design will be destroyed in a similar manner as it seems to be destroyed in engineering and allegedly is about to be destroyed in nursing. I understand this is hard to see for those who never practiced design themselves. But a small dose of humility towards this potential risk would be appreciated. I’m not saying there is no humility but we are hardly discussing what the increasing weighting of EBD would replace and what would be the risk.
And once more: I am not against the use of evidence in design I just think EBD destroys the balance. It’s in the name already.
I really need to end my engagement in the discussion. Running out of time ....
All the best
