The University of Memphis Department of Art invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Graphic Design beginning August
2016.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The University of Memphis Department of Art is seeking a tenure-track faculty member committed to teaching
undergraduate and graduate courses with a primary focus in Interactive, Web, Motion Graphics and Time-Based
Media. The candidate will be responsible for teaching three courses per semester and should have knowledge of
current and emerging technologies in new media and have a strong background in design theory and history. Strong
consideration will be given to candidates who also demonstrate knowledge and sensitivity to design aesthetics and
typography. Other duties will include advising graphic design majors, developing curriculum, mentoring students with
internships, engaging in professional activities and participating in department and college-wide service.

The University of Memphis has an enrollment of over 21,500 that is divided among six colleges. The University is
located in the largest urban center in Tennessee and the Mid-South region. The Department of Art is a component of
the College of Communication and Fine Arts along with the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music, the Art Museum of The
University of Memphis, the Centers for Multimedia Arts and Sustainable Design, the Institute of Egyptian Art and
Archaeology, a Tennessee Center of Excellence, and the Departments of Architecture, Theatre & Dance,
Communication, and Journalism. The Department of Art is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art
and Design.
The Department of Art offers Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees in various fine arts concentrations
as well as Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in Art History. There are approximately 300 art majors taught
by 24 full time arts faculty. The Department is also served by 5 professional staff. Further information about the

QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must hold an MFA or appropriate terminal degree and should be professionally active with a record of
creative achievements. Previous teaching experience at the college level is desired. Candidates must be proficient with
the Macintosh platform and current/emerging software and programming languages for creating new media. Salary is
competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
