Hi Francois,
That counter-intuitive draft is more like an idea I'm exploring rather than something coming together into a refereed paper.
I haven't really been writing academic journal and conference papers for the last couple of years as I've been mostly working outside universities. So the aim of what I wrote is more to explore and develop the idea rather than move straight to publishing.
This is something akin to what Bruce Schneier does (and I'm no Bruce Schneier!) when he publishes ideas and parts of possible future books to ask for comments on whether people feel it’s a useful direction. Later he builds on the directions indicated by the comments to produce the book proper, which is often in a different direction to that which he initially proposed. I believe he used that on Secrets and Lies, Carry On, and Liers and Outliers. Bruce Schneier is also one who focuses on the counter-intuitive. If you want to read more, Bruce has a great newsletter, Cryptogram at https://www.schneier.com/crypto-gram/
An example of Bruce's counter-intuitive thinking... Someone has invented a special security water with a personalised modified trace molecule in the water. Spill a drop on your belongings and they can be identified as yours against a database of who has which molecule. Makes the world more secure against theft or...Bruce suggests a counter intuitive way of seeing it is, 'Great! Now what can I borrow off you....?'
In part, you might see that short draft I posted as part exploration and part explaining what I do, and the basis of things I write on the phd-design list. I focus on finding valid counter-intuitive explanations rather than the obvious comfortable or pleasing explanations. The nature of intuition and feeling about explanations means that most intuitively-pleasing explanations will soon be found to be incorrect, because the nature of something being intuitively pleasing means it is based on past ways of thinking, few of which endure.
Valid counterintuitive explanations provoke discomfort and also lively debate that generally moves things on.
Perhaps you could see the draft I posted as a call to discomfort. It could also be seen as a call to delight.
Perhaps you could also see the authorship issue you raised the other way round? If you publish something using the ideas I put out, perhaps you could ask me to be a second-author to you (grin) . Actually, I'm very happy to write and co-author with anyone who is interested in putting out counter-intuitive and disruptive analyses and research findings.
Ok - here is another counter-intuitive research finding.
A dominant process for absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere is via soil bacteria entrapping CO2 and converting it into carbon compounds held in the soil. Plants and bushes encourage soil bacteria and improve the process and raise the capture of CO2 by soil bacteria. Trees, however, have the opposite effect, they reduce the ability of soil bacteria to absorb and store CO2 in the soil. Trees themselves are CO2 neutral in storage over their lifetime. So... it is important to avoid planting trees if you want to help remove CO2 from the atmosphere. Planting trees is environmentally unhelpful.
Here is another counter-intuitive idea...two related questions that apply to creative design theories.
Why are we so bad at intuition? Why when we have the feeling we have a correct intuition are we so convinced we are right and our intuition is correct , when the answer from our intuition can be demonstrated to be incorrect?
I'm rambling.
If you or anyone else wants to send me ideas and comments on the counter-intuitive draft at http://www.love.com.au/index.php/26-counter-intuitive , and something ever makes it into refereed print, I'm happy to share or even abdicate authorship.
Warm regards,
Terence
