Music and Power in the Baroque Era
11-13 November 2016
Lucca, Complesso Monumentale di San Micheletto
organized by
Centro Studi Opera Omnia Luigi Boccherini (Lucca)
The Centro Studi Opera Omnia Luigi Boccherini of Lucca is pleased to invite submissions of proposals for the symposium «Music and Power in the Baroque Era», to be held in Lucca, Complesso Monumentale di San Micheletto, from Friday 11 until Sunday 13 November 2016. In the Baroque period the production of Western Art music was usually sponsored by patrons. As an essential part of social life, music accompanied both everyday and extraordinary events, in both sacred and secular contexts. Commissioned by monarchs, high priests and aristocrats, music became a means of celebrating the power of these figures and their clients, of their lineage, if not of an entire nation. Within this perspective, music emerges as a powerful instrument of political propaganda, subject to pressures and to censorship.
This conference will offer case studies that focus on the interaction between music creation, music production, and power. The period to be considered ranges from 1600 until approximately 1750, and the geographical focus is predominantly European. The scientific committee particularly welcomes proposals that address the themes listed below, although other, related topics are welcome:
• Music and Clerical Power
• Music for the Court
• The Patrons of the European Aristocracy
• Musical Production Systems
• Occasional/Celebrative Music
• Music and Censorship
• Music and Wars
• Musicians’ Social Status
