Hi all
PhD student Mark Stillings is looking for a field assistant for his upcoming data collection in Switzerland. Mark will be carrying out groundwater sampling and structural geological mapping in granite tunnels at the Grimsel test site (GTS).
Field work will start in the last week of January 2016 (28/01/16), and will be finished by the end of March 2016 (31/03/16) to coincide with the drainage and refilling of Lake Raterichsboden. Mark will be driving to Switzerland and staying in a flat in the village of Gutannan, just down the valley from the GTS. Travel and accommodation expenses for the field assistant will be covered.
The basis of the project:
Stress changes due to unloading during reservoir drainage should cause either opening or closing of existing fractures, depending on their orientation and position relative to Lake Raterichsboden. These events may result in changes in groundwater composition, due to changes in the flow regime, exposure of fresh mineral surfaces or changes in the proportions of different groundwater components. Results from a previous lake drainage have shown detectable changes in groundwater physicochemistry, flow and major cation/anion chemistry.
The purpose of the Field Trip:
To take groundwater samples from boreholes in an underground tunnel system, during the draining and refilling of the reservoir. Sampling will be daily during the drainage (for 1 week) and then weekly. Alongside the groundwater sampling you will be mapping the structures within the tunnel system that are hosting the flow.
If you are interested, please contact Mark Stillings with a CV
