Hello Alex,
I am glad to know that we have similar research interests, and I hope we will have the chance to share our thoughts in the future.
I am aware that CMU has an outstanding background in research on privacy and security. I am also aware of the important contribution of Jason Hong and Jodi Forlizzi in this area and in the conceptualisation of the Research Through Design as design research method. Of course to have their opinion on this topic would be fantastic, even though my email is just scratching the surface of the problem.
I also think that the social cyber security perspective you mentioned is interesting, and I would like to know more.
Don, thank you again for your reply.
I definitely agree with you about the needs of approaching research on privacy and security differently.
As I tried to point out, for the best of my knowledge there is a small but intriguing amount of research that considers subjective experiences as a crucial aspect to address in privacy and security research, and it seems to me a promising path to follow for conducting design research in this area.
Finally, I read the book you mentioned and suggested months ago, and it is a very good news that David Brin is working on an updated version of The Transparent Society. I will add it in my personal library for sure.
I hope to have the chance to discuss further with you on these topics in the future.
Best regards,
Alessandro

This is the second time I am writing to the list about my research on
informational privacy and design and I need to apologise with Don Norman
since I did not answer back to his reply to my first thread. The reason is
that he was so successful in overturning the aim of my initial question
when I was in the earliest stage of my research, that I realised it would
have taken me months to build an opinion on his strong statement about
“full disclosure is often the antidote to privacy”. I sincerely hope to get
his feedback also on the topic introduced above.
Alessandro
I am delighted to see your new discussion of informational privacy where
you recognize the importance of the subjective experiences, as well as
recognizing that security and privacy are two rather different concepts,
each requiring different approaches. The two, however, are not independent,
so modifying one can impact the other.
My "strong" statement owes credit to David Brin, a well-known science
fiction author (with a PhD in physics) and also a frequent and
authoritative commentator on the real social issues that he writes about in
his fiction. David is a friend and frequent visitor to the Design Lab. See
his book "The transparent society" (which he is now rewriting and updating.)
