medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Durand says nothing there about setting out the outline of the church, but does give a good description of the dedication/consecration ceremony for a completed church. Towards the beginning of chapter one we do, however, find (paragraph 7 in Thibodeau's translation):
"A church must therefore be built as follows: after having prepared the place of its foundation, according to the text "The Lord's house is well established on a solid rock," the bishop or priest who has permission to preside sprinkles it with holy water to banish henceforth the demonic spirits, and places the principal stone, into which a cross is imprinted, on the foundation."

You might try Guillaume Durand, and T. M. Thibodeau, The Rationale Divinorum Officiorum of William Durand of Mende (a New Translation of the Prologue and Book One), New York: Columbia University Press, 2007. -- Paul

Greetings all,
Where can I quickly find out the ritual for founding/dedicating a church? In a saint's life I have an example of the saint marking off the outline of the church, and I have a feeling that I have read about this as part of the ritual somewhere. I need a source good enough for a footnote. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
Meg
