The National Library of Scotland and Klokan Technologies GmbH have just launched our new Historic Maps Subscription API, allowing anyone to incorporate five detailed historic georeferenced map layers relating to Great Britain and London into their own website.
There are further details at: http://maps.nls.uk/projects/subscription-api/index.html
Initially we have five main layers available:
1. Subscription API - Great Britain, Ordnance Survey (1:1 million - 1:10,560), 1900s
2. Great Britain, Ordnance Survey six-inch to the mile (1:10,560), 1888-1913
3. Great Britain, Ordnance Survey 'Provisional' edition (1:25,000), 1937-1961
4. Great Britain, Ordnance Survey One-Inch Seventh Series (1:63,360), 1955-1961
5. London, Ordnance Survey Five-foot to the mile (1:1,056), 1893-1896
The new Historic Maps Subscription API shares much in common with our original Historic Maps API launched in 2010 http://maps.nls.uk/projects/api/index.html (for further information, see
http://www.e-perimetron.org/vol_7_4/fleet_pridal.pdf ). We have prepared layers of historic mapping as seamless, georeferenced mosaics using MapTiler ( http://www.maptiler.com/ ), and the results are distributed on the Tileserver platform ( http://www.tileserver.com/ ), providing very fast and reliable hosting. The historic map layers can be easily incorporated into other web-mapping applications, used for research purposes, used as a backdrop for your own data or used to create derivative work.
We intend to continue the original Historic Maps API as a freely available service, but the Subscription API layers are more detailed, and have involved more work to create. Subscriptions are necessary to fund these additional costs, as well as the costs of hosting, licensing, and 24/7 availability. The API conforms with international web-mapping standards, and so the layers are simple to incorporate inside your own web mapping applications with demonstration viewers and code.
