**Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Earthquake Cycle Modelling
Department of Earth Sciences, University of Oxford
The department seeks to appoint a PDRA to work under the direction of
Professors Barry Parsons and Philip England (University of Oxford), and
Professor Greg Houseman (University of Leeds), on a project funded by
the Natural Environment Research Council. The PDRA will undertake
dynamically-consistent numerical calculations to investigate the
dependence of the earthquake cycle on the mechanical structure of fault
zones and to interpret detailed, high-spatial resolution time series of
surface motion following large earthquakes.
The PDRA will be expected to use existing three-dimensional,
visco-elastic numerical codes to investigate general characteristics of
the earthquake cycle, extending the codes where necessary. He/She will
also be responsible for the modelling and interpretation of post-seismic
surface displacements observed using satellite radar and, where
available, GPS.Measurements from multiple radar satellites obtained as
part of the project will be assimilated into the dynamical models in
order to constrain the frictional properties of faults and the
mechanical properties of the surrounding lithosphere.
