The Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute is a public institution with the mandate to contribute to the improvement of the health of populations internationally and nationally through excellence in research, services, and teaching and training. The Department of Epidemiology and Public Health (EPH), within the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, develops and applies epidemiological, statistical and biomathematical methods to advance innovation, validation, and application in the field of public health. We offer a multidisciplinary and international research environment. In our Biostatistics Unit, we are looking for interested candidates for a PhD Position in heterogeneity in malaria dynamics.
Malaria transmission, morbidity and mortality, and contributing factors such as mosquito breeding sites or access to treatment, are unevenly distributed at a local level. Characterising patterns of fine-scale heterogeneity, how areas interconnect and how they respond to interventions will provide information for use in models to predict the effects of interventions and more generally in designing effective malaria control strategies.
We are looking for a candidate who has a background in statistics, epidemiology, mathematical modelling or a related field. The candidate should have a masters degree in statistics or a quantitative subject. The ability to communicate effectively in English is essential.
The position is based in Basel and the successful applicant will be registered for a doctoral degree at the University of Basel. The studentship provides support for three years and covers tuition fees and a salary commensurate with the Swiss National Science Foundation and Swiss TPH System.
The position is available immediately however a later starting date is possible by negotiation.
The closing date for applications is October 11, 2015.
