Subject: On confusing, ambiguous badly written job ads and conference announcements
I see it all the time. Design professionals who have zero empathy for
their audience, even when communicating with other design professionals.
Design talks that are mainly bragging "I did this and then i did that"
instead of telling us why, how, what errors were made, how they were
overcome, and what lessons are to be learned.
Job and conference advertisements that use acronyms, so the reader has no
idea what the name of the conference or university is, or where it is
located, or what it does.
Here is one for HKU -- obviously meaning Hong Kong University -- that must
be what HKU stands for, right?

I read the long advertisement seeking a clue for the real name of the
university -- or perhaps trade school. All I could think of was Hong Kong
University, you know, as in HKUST. (Hong Kong University of Science and
Technology).
I did wonder why the salary was in Euros and the URL ended in .nl. Hong
Kong University has opened up a branch in the netherlands?
Oh wait,
Our office location is close to the centre of the city of Utrecht.
HKU Mandates that Professors possess sufficient English language
proficiency, as determined by an objective measurement: IELTS 8/TOEFL iBT
120.
HKU encourages all interested persons to apply, regardless of age, gender,
religious affiliation or ethnic background

Near Utrecht?
Why would Hong Kong University not move to Amsterdam?
So now I think I know it is in the Netherlands, but I still have
no idea what HKU stands for, if it stands for anything except confusion,
that is.

Come on people: TEST! Ask a non-designer to read your announcements. Ask
someone unfamiliar with the topic to read them.
Stop using undefined acronyms.
Curmudgeonly yours
