Hi, I’m just back from Berlin at the 59th meeting of the ISSS (International
Society for the Systems Sciences http://isss.org/ ) where I gave one of the
keynote addresses, a workshop and a paper toward developing our work in
systemic design. We focused on: Governing the Anthropocene: the greatest
challenge for systems thinking in practice?
For the first time, the ISSS went new media, broadcasting all the keynotes
live with the Bluejeans platform, live sketching, posting on Twitter. We had
about 230 people, including a student of Ranulph Glanville’s and a number of
thoughtful systems thinker keynotes – Mary Catherine Bateson, Michael
Lissack, Liss Werner and Louis Klein. There’s continuing interest in
developing a design orientation, but it’s still “developmental”.
Relating Systems Thinking and Design - RSD is coming up in less than a
month, and it’s the only venue I know where we’re fusing a strong designerly
focus with systemics and integrated systems theory and practice. We have all
the papers and speakers selected (see below) but I’d love to see some more
people from the list who Birger and I may have never met. Travel isn’t bad
to Calgary then and the amazing Banff Centre venue is giving us a great
deal.
Relating Systems Thinking and Design 4 Symposium
Join us in accelerating the convergence of design, social, and technology
fields toward co-creating humanized systems. We invite participants,
presenters and students from across practices, disciplines and design fields
to register for the RSD4 <http://systemic-design.net/> Symposium, Banff,
Canada, September 1-3, 2015.
The RSD series has advanced an agenda for a strong integration between
systems thinking and design to take on the most important challenges facing
our planet today. The theme of this year's symposium is At the Frontiers of
Systemic Design.
Hosted for the first time in North America, with sponsorship from the
Government of Alberta, we are reaching out to new audiences while
maintaining the ethos of a small and intimate lightweight symposium.
To celebrate the interplay between theory and practice, each day of the
symposium iterates between peer-reviewed talks and collaborative workshops
that build skills and take on real world challenges enabled by systemic
design approaches.
We have confirmed 5 extraordinary keynote speakers over the three day event:
* Mugendi M’Rithaa, Cape Peninsula University of Technology. South
Africa
* Don Norman, University of California, San Diego, US
* Lia Patrício, University of Porto, Portugal
* Ann Pendleton-Jullian, The Ohio State University and Georgetown
University, US
* Ursula Tischner, Agency for Sustainable Design, Cologne, Germany
Registration for the 3 day event costs CAD $240, which includes breakfast,
lunch and snacks. There is an optional symposium dinner for an additional
CAD $60. The Banff Centre provides for a limited number of reserved
accommodations onsite.
Other hotel options and travel details are provided on our traveler tips
<http://systemic-design.net/rsd4-2015/venue/> page. We encourage early
registration as both onsite accommodation and symposium tickets will sell
out fast!
We look forward to being with you in September.
