Hi Jacob,
blender is an excellent program. It is designed to make movies like
those from Pixar.
I find povray easier to learn and much easier to understand. Coot can
make use of povray for rendering, which might be a good starting point.
I would probably first look into raster3D. It is designed for a very
specific purpose and hence has fewer options than the above two
programs. This makes it a lot easier to use in my opinion, although I
am not sure it supports all the shapes you are looking for.
One of the advantages of using raster3D is that Ethan Merrit is one of
the original authors and the person who supports it, i.e. you might get
help from someone reading this bb.
