Donald W. Reynolds School of Journalism and Advanced Media Studies, University of Nevada Reno

Assistant Professor of User Experience Design (Tenure Track)

Are you excited by the challenge of designing for constantly changing users and technologies?

Are you passionate about using technology to help communities and journalists reach each other in meaningful, engaging ways?

Do you need to share your skills and experience through scholarly and creative work?

Position Summary

The Donald W. Reynolds School of Journalism and Advanced Media Studies (The Reynolds School) at the University of Nevada Reno seeks an interaction/user experience designer who has a passion for improving the user experience of media consumption. This full-time, tenure-track faculty position would suit a designer with strong programming skills, who is inspired by the possibilities presented by the convergence of interaction design and media practice.

The Assistant Professor of Interaction Design will teach design strategies and skills that help journalism students identify community needs, and respond to them by building community-relevant interactive media products and tools. The strategies and skills taught will include user experience design, as well as graphic design production for web, mobile, and print. While we seek a well-rounded applicant capable of teaching mobile, web, and print media design strategies and skills, we will give preference to candidates with strong mobile and web production skills.

The successful applicant will split his or her time equally between teaching and research. Therefore, the successful candidate will demonstrate a capacity to strengthen the School’s research profile by conducting research on an area of his or her interest, with either scholarly or creative outcomes. The applicant will be required to regularly produce research outcomes, and to publicize those research outcomes by presenting at scholarly and/or professional conferences. The Reynolds School has emerging research programs in communication effectiveness and health communication. Applicants with research interests intersecting these areas are strongly encouraged to apply. Building a collaborative, industry-relevant research culture is a priority for the Reynolds School, therefore applicants with a strong interest in research collaboration are also strongly encouraged to apply.

User Experience Design at the Reynolds School

This new position has been created to fulfill the growing need for journalism graduates with strong skills in interactive media production. The Reynolds School acknowledges that design is becoming integral to the success of media and strategic communication businesses, and we seek to position ourselves at the leading edge of journalism education, integrating interaction design and media production. We have begun this commitment by requiring all students to take both design and media production courses at freshmen and sophomore levels. The successful applicant will be part of a team teaching the freshmen design course, and will also develop more specialized interactive media production courses at the upper undergraduate and graduate levels.

Requirements

The successful candidate will have the following:

- A minimum level of education at Masters level with an interaction design or user experience design focus. Other specializations at the Masters or PhD levels will be considered if the applicant has an undergraduate degree in a design discipline.

- A proven ability to teach design production skills, including coding for web & mobile, user interface design for mobile, web front end development, and print production.

- Expert, up-to-date understanding of the following front end development languages: HTML, CSS, and Javascript.

- Evidence of the ability to produce scholarly work and/or creative activities suitable for tenure. To see our tenure guidelines, please click <here>.

Desirable Qualifications

The following are highly desirable traits, but are not required:

- A PhD in a design field.

- Evidence of previous peer reviewed creative activities or academic publication.

- Some knowledge of any of the following languages: JSON, PHP, Ruby, XML.

- Professional experience as a user experience or interaction designer.

Submission Requirements

1. A resume of no more than three pages, including an online portfolio url.

2. A cover letter of one page, outlining your motivation to join us at The Reynolds School.
