While the use of the terms "new" and "old" ideas in design has its place in "the history of design ideas" (within "the history of ideas"), and therefore relevant to design research, in terms of creativity and innovation it would be more productive to think of "new" and "old" ideas not as opposites but combinations thereof - not "either/or" but "both/and".
For example, the history of Facebook suggests the social networking service was "new" in that it combined the tradition of university student dating with the development of online technology. Or, the "newness" of smartphones in combining the development of mobile operating systems with touchscreens.
