HI Karl
Thank you for your clarification on this. Are there any plans for a
specific OH course from the ARTP?

Best regards
Karen

Dear All,

This is the official line from our ARTP Spirometry Chair for your
information:

"We wouldn't accept drawn graphs of obstructive and restrictive patients
using the current marking scheme for the full certificate. There are 2 ways
round this for occupational health workers:

1. do the foundation spirometry certificate (as these can be any types of
patients) and then top up with the interpretation certificate where they
have to interpret spirometry that the ARTP provides.
2. If they are experienced in spirometry (at least 3 years) and are
regularly performing spirometry, go through the Experienced practitioner
scheme as these can be any types of spirometry as well."

I hope that helps but please feel free to come back with any additional
queries.

Best wishes

Karl

Interesting as rang the ARTP and they told me they would not accept drawn
graphs in lieu of patient graphs for the obstruction and restriction part,
only for the common errors part.

informative. Not sure if this has already been discussed but yes tracings
are an essential part of spirometry interpretation and part of the course
asks you to submit several copies of tracings evidencing various respiratory
problems. As OH practitioners we may not come across sufficient evidence in
the time scale requested but the ARTP are quite happy for the student to
draw graphs that represent different stages of obstruction etc. I know we
don't do spirometry to diagnose but what I have learned helps me support my
clients who may have other respiratory problems. The VC should be done, it
can be an important indicator of COPD when compared with the FVC and knowing
this information enhances the OH practitioners knowledge and ultimately
support of their clients
