Dear Colleagues,
We would like to draw your attention and to encourage you to submit your abstract to our topical session at the next 2015 GSA Annual Meeting (1-4 November 2015, Baltimore, Maryland)
T209. Rheological Behavior of Ductile Lithosphere during Strain Localization
Lower crust and upper mantle can be rheologically distinct. However, a universality of strain localization processes promoting shear zone formation has been suggested for these two lithospheric layers. Importantly, strain weakening has been considered as a prerequisite for strain localization to occur. Putting quantitative constraints on the spatiotemporal changes of the rheological behavior of the ductily deforming lithosphere is crucial for understanding shear zone formation and evolution as well as slip in the deep parts of lithospheric-scale fault zones. This session seeks contributions from field-based, microstructural, experimental and modeling studies that provide insights on the deformation processes promoting strain localization and shear zone formation in the lower crust and upper mantle.
The session is sponsored by the GSA Structural Geology and Tectonics Division
